Update 6.36pm: I seem to have run out of things to do, but I'm sure that's more because I've forgotten them than actually being finished. Anyway. For people interested, here's the abstract as it stands for what my dissertation this year's about:
This study of a group of gay men within the setting of a campus university attempts to uncover the fundamental features of the experience of gay identity construction in contemporary Britain. Placing these students at the centre of the research, an ethnographic analysis is presented whereby the choice and experience of television viewership of these young men is located as a strategic site within the development of a ‘gay’ identity. Outlining the continuing need for such individuals to work on non-heterosexual sexuality identities through various social arenas, the young men concerned provide evidence as to the ways in which consumption of fictional television portrayals play a central role in first establishing and confirming, and then reinforcing, gay male identity, and how television viewership might prove a positive resource within a continuingly heternormative society.
Phew. Also, for the record, I can think of less pleasant ways of being woken up than by Darren Hayes' "Popular" being put on. Mmm.
