In praise of…February
For too long now February has been thought to be the dullest and most depressing month of the year. Worse than January where you still have that post Christmas glow and the ever present possibility of finding uneaten chocolate christmas tree decorations, or a half drunk bottle of baileys that you’d forgotten about, manages to just about get you through the day and take the edge off being back at work. Much worse than March when spring is just around the corner and the sun begins to shine again, the temperature begins to rise, and if your very lucky you can put your big thick winter coat away for another 8 months.
But in February the days are so dark, and the weather is so damp with continual drizzle that the thought of spring seems impossible, and all thats left of the post christmas glow are the extra pounds you put on eating the left over chocolate tree decorations and drinking the rest of the (very large) bottle of baileys.
But February has two points very strongly in its favour - pancakes and hot cross buns! Why are panackes consigned to a single day a year? They are simple, easy, versatile (they don’t just go with honey and lemon you know!) and that rare ingrediant of cooking - actually fun to make, and so simple that even my brother and I could turn out a whole batch of very tasty pancakes on Friday night after several glasses of wine.
The consigning of hot cross buns to only two weeks a year also seems unfortunate. If you can find cream eggs in your local corner shop on Christmas Eve than there seems to be no reason why you shouldn’t be able to eat hot cross buns in June. But whilst they are the preserve of February there is nothing better than coming home from an afternoon out in the dank, damp weather to a warm hot cross bun spread with buttter and honey, preferably accompanied by the last of the bottle of baileys but if you’ve already drunk that a cup of herbal tea will do instead
Hot cross buns eaten today: 2
Pancakes eaten on Friday: 7
Burning question: what should I do for my birthday?
