July 13, 2004 « five things we're nervous about \| Main \| the o.c., on tv » angel: not just fanboy wibbling I could quote Mr. Joss Whedon - who created what I regard as some of the most incredibly network television I've ever seen, including "Buffy" and this, its younger spin-off - at you until the world, rather fittingly, ended. However, such an approach does seem the most fitting way to open an appreciation of what is, very possibly, the finest example of a complete season of any drama he's created. "Never give audiences what they want; you have to give them what they need". Not only is that a fitting quote to introduce any of Whedon's work, but it's also the maxim you can see being put into practice with incredible effectiveness throughout much of the middle season of Angel, Buffy's more noir-ish - and increasingly hugely arcing - sibling. The first two seasons set the groundwork, and it's in this one that it all begins to pay off. Obviously writing an appreciation of a single season of a continuity-based television drama is incredibly difficult because you can't afford to give anything away. But the set-up - Angel, a centuries old vampire, battling against, in the words of Buffy's introductory blurb, "the forces of darkness" in modern-day Los Angeles - has as its greatest strength its flexibility. Just as Buffy used its monster-of-the-week format to deal with a range of social and emotional issues, its offshoot uses them to explore a more adult world, one of both metaphorical and literal evil and, yes, darkness. It's a city. Angel can only go out at night. There was always going to be a lot of that. ...and being a particularly sexual vampire, he's also boffed rather a lot of other vampires So demons are real, and there's all the emotional baggage of the rest of life to deal with as well. That's probably enough to be going on with, but Angel's other greatest strength lies in the character itself - he's a vampire. Being a vampire, he's been alive rather a lot, and being a particularly sexual vampire, he's also boffed rather a lot of other vampires. It's this backstory that provides Season 3 with much of its narrative drive, all of which leads up to an incredible - and, interestingly within the canon, previously impossible - climax. Slow-building climaxes are what Whedon does best, and this one's a classic, all twists and revelations and characters slowly (or not so slowly, in one particular instance) developing and changing. Let's just say, what I find the best thing about this season is the way that, at its end, you can't believe the characters you started off with ever were like that. One character does something very morally ambiguous and, whilst moral ambiguity not being something the series exactly has a patent on, it's admirably seen all the way through in plot terms. Another has some more practical getting-out-of-here issues to deal with. And still another leaves this plane entirely. So it's all very fantastical and yes, obviously, that leaves it open to geekiness. But I still maintain that it's what this fantasy allows the writers to explore about the real world that draws me to the series - I'm big on allusion and metaphor and allegory at the best of times. And, as a sensitive examination of growing up in a world that's too large and confusing to even begin to comprehend, it's among the best examples I've ever seen in any form of literature. I don't think recommendations come any greater than that. And yeah, so there's a lot I can't talk about. There's a lot I'd like to fanboyly wibble on at you about, like how removed happened and wasn't removed just the coolest thing? But if you ever get the chance to watch it, don't let the fantasy-ness, or the potential geekiness, or the bad latex face adornments, for that matter, put you off. Stay with it.
