July 12, 2004 « canada flag \| Main \| thursday: bows trip! » why i love iTunes Look, it's an iTunes window... ...And, so, yes I know that thousands upon thousands of blogging inches have been given over to the addition of the iTunes window onto the desktops of the modern world. It's a phenomenon. More importantly, it's little and silver and I love it. Here's why. I never liked Media Player. It was too big and too clunky, prioritising funky little "visualisations" over actually not being ugly, and it was made by Microsoft who still haven't been over to fix that whole software window they broke and all the little neighbourhood kids keep climbing in through (metaphorically speaking, of course). WinAmp, although all the geeks I know still swear by it - and does do that whole appealling blog-your-playlist plugin - is just even more upsettingly ugly for me to ever consider using. It's grey, ferferkssake. Can't be doing with grey. Also, I've got quite enough pop-ups for one computer as it is, thankyou very much. So iTunes, with its discreet shininess, pleased me greatly upon it being recommended to me about six months back. It's nifty; it sits in the corner of my screen and I don't even notice it being there half the time. Or rather, I'd notice it hugely if it was gone. It lists how many songs there are in my library; this makes my little inner completist happy. It arranges them in terms of how many times I played them; who they're by, and what TV soundtrack I heard them off; this makes my little inner sorty-sorterson happy. It crossfades songs into each other, often with amusing comic effect; the sound of Aimee Mann mixing herself into the works of Primal Scream makes me generally internally very happy. It makes me happy. It's rare I get gooey over a piece of software (enough, child at the back). I'm just not that fussed. If my browser isn't able to open lots of windows at once, or my screen flickers, or my Messenger pogoes, it doesn't usually bother me enough to get them changed. iTunes broke that. By making me more geeky, I should really hate it with all my being. Then it looks at me, scrolls its little titles around coquettishly, and it melts my big anti-geek heart. > Resources For no other reason than that it was playing while I was writing this article, you can use GMail to nab Garbage's "Lick the Pavement" and Beulah's "Popular Mechanics For Broken Hearts" off me, should you so wish. Posted by matt at July 12, 2004 12:27 PM Comments You realise that both Winamp and, for that matter, Window Media Player both support "skins" or "themes" that allow you to change both the colour and shape and arrangement of their controls, right? So you can get WinAmp to look just like iTunes. Also, I don't understand how "grey" WinAmp is different from "silver" iTunes -- given that computer screens are not actually mirrors, there's no way either of them can be "shiny"... and in fact they both look pretty similar (I prefer WinAmp's original black-and-green look to both). On the other hand, iTunes does have some nifty functionality that WinAmp lacks, but then the reverse is also true. But for a player that's easy to get looking pretty, I still think iTunes has it (and as far as I can see, if you're gonna make WinAmp look like iTunes, you may as well just get iTunes in the first place). And I guess for "shiny" I meant "all shaded and textured and pretty" rather than "glinty like I'm a magpie", but I guess that was my bad.
