leaving new york
It's nearly autumn again, so - acely - it's time for another R.E.M. single. There's a 30 second clip of Leaving New York here (it's Quicktime, erksomely). Sounds, well, exactly like all other R.E.M. stuff ever, but then I've always listened to it more to see what Michael Stipe's singing about at the moment rather than any inherent musical genius.
And also, there's a strange way I explicitly link a lot of R.E.M.'s music with the onset of autumn - particularly the Out of Time and Automatic for the People albums. Restarting school, smoky mornings, clear skies - all really evocative, and somehow nostalgic.
Big Brother: The Final Countdown
With 6 housemates now left in the [insert Geordie accent] "Big Brother House" [remove Geordie accent] the chance of winning the whole competition is very much there for the taking. I have watched most of this series which I feel can rival the first one, if not surpass it. By analysing the 6 remaining housemates I am going to predict how I think they will do in terms of winning the series.

Whilst quite not an experimental child, raised only by American TV imports and teen soaps, TV has played a fairly big role in my upbringing. I'm all diverse media and self-referential trashiness, me - the internet, videogames, teen television, CD covers...I embrace the disposable media. It is my friend.
As such, I have no problem with the idea that I'm all postmodern. I don't think it's a dirty word. I like it, and I like the idea that people are collages of their experiences, fractured, layered. You do your hair like that because him off the TV does it. You call your child David because of Beckham. Cultural recycling. Life imitating art.

Matt's preparing for an uncertain autumn with the help of his trusty scarf and the prospect of new R.E.M. material. That, and Baileys.

It's the new R.E.M. single! Well, 30 seconds of it. Still, just play it six times. That's essentially what the song'll sound like.

musicplasma and "popular"
19 July
The first of what should be a regular Monday occurence, the downloadable MP3, which this week is the frankly amazing "Popular" by Darren Hayes. Also, bands you've never heard of represented as planets. It's better than it sounds.
